First Try...

My first attempt at blogging...

some other experiences...

Well...

Things never go has planned. While i had the time to start building on the myvideos work, i got side tracked with trying to use my Raspberry PI for something.

First tried just to run it and see how it worked, but then while aimlessly browsing the internet i read about Pi-hole.

Pi-hole

And that made me look into it, and how to use it at home to filter out unwanted advertisement.

And after a couple of tries, and figuring out what would be the best way to install it, the correct and right size for the SD card, and how to go about using it and configuring it on the way, i am starting to have a setup that seems to work fine and filters a lot of ads.

I did a couple of reinstalls until i was happy with the way it work, and now i am just on waiting on the last reinstall to have just the Raspberry Pi OS in its most basic form without any graphic environment, a pure commandline only setup.

While using Pi-hole there was a lot of ads that are removed and you no longer need any adblocker on the browser.
One area that doesnt work is the Youtube video ads where Pi-hole doesnt remove them.

But with the good reporting pages, you can see how things are blocked, what is blocked and what devices are making most of the requests and you can see percentages of blocked versus non blocked ips.

Some interesting findings by looking at the stats, is that Samsung phones, for example, have a lot of bloatware (not a surprise) and sometimes one single phone is reponsible for almost 50% of the blocked requests in total.
Another finding is that corporate laptops also do a lot of request for all types of corporate ips for tracking and monitoring purposes.

This is something interesting to look at what is being dns requested and what devices are asking for. It will be a regular looking into the stats to see what is being blocked and what is not.

One area that is good is with all the games/apps from the app stores where they have some kind of ads after you pass a level, or some kind of timed ads. This ones are all removed, and makes the use of the apps/games way much better without being annoyed by any ads video and sound.
